Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m 46yo F. have had nausea for a couple of days, yesterday was the second time this week I vomited, but last night it was very lime green, didn t feel too acidic, most of the lime green appeared to be the consistency of mucus. I know it wasn t anything I had eaten. When I vomited a couple days ago, it looked like normal colored brown emesis from someone who maybe hadn t eaten much. I know what bile looks like, and I ve been in the medical field 26 years and I have NEVER seen vomit this color
A green colored vomitus which is not acidic is due to bile without any doubts. Besides bile in vomitus, green colored vomit could also be due to ingestion of some green colored food item. However, further management consists of clinical assessment by your primary health provider. A consultation with a gastroenterologist may be required. An ultrasound abdomen is required to assess the status of abdominal organs- whether there is organomegaly or features of obstruction. Vomiting with green colored vomitus suggests an obstruction beyond the opening of common bile duct. Ultrasound may be followed by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Treatment can be instituted after knowing the diagnosis.
