What Is The Chances Of A 53-year-old Getting Pregnant?

I am 53 and still taking birth control. My recently visited a new Dr. (gyn) to get a pap smear and checkup. I explained to her that I was having some spotting/bleeding between periods and the periods were longer now. It is now normal for me to spot for several days between periods. Once she discovered that I was taking BC...she said that I need to go off of it to see if I was possible in menopause. She said the BC was probably masking my symptoms. I am planning a trip to Costa Rica in August and have approx. 1/2 pack left. She said I could stop after this pack or wait until I return so if I did have hot flashes or something...at least I wouldn t be on my trip. Your thoughts? What is the chances of me getting pregnant? I sure don t want that at this stage in my life! I have taken BC since my baby... born 32 years ago.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I think you may be at premenstrual state and pregnancy is still possible. You may need to finish this pack of contraception pills in and don't take anymore in order to see if you are having irregular periods or you aren't having at all. Also you should keep another protection method such condoms in order to prevent pregnancy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka, General & Family Physician
