What Is The Difference Between Protonix And Zantac?

My gastroenterologist has taken me off of Protonix. Now he is telling me to use Zantac as needed. I took tums this morning due to heart burn. Now it s back after lunch and really burning. What is the difference between Protonix and zantac? (The Zantac side effects look scary!) I am tired of this burning in my chest and esophagus. Can you suggest something to help?

I have read through your question and would like to tell you that Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor while Zantac is a histamine 2 blocker. Both are used to control the gastric acidity. If you are not getting relief by Zantac or experiencing any side-effects, you can ask your physician to switch back to Protonix or a different drug like Rabeprazole. To avoid gastric acidity and reflux, you should not eat spicy and oily food. Cut down the intake of sugar, alcohol and caffeine. Avoid eating anything two hours before you go to sleep.
