What Is The Difference Between Gastroenteritis And Gastritis?

What is the difference between Gastroenteritis & Gastritis? I have had the symptoms for both for almost 2 years. Have had negative colonoscopy & endoscopy. The Dr said I had burned stomach lining. Weaned off of Omerprazole,[ gastroenterologist Dr.s RX] last summer , he said I had gastritis, now symptoms are back & I m taking that again. Not really helping. Nauseous a lot. I developed this the week my dad died while visiting him in the hospital 2 years ago. I ate there several times. I have no pain or cramping. Just nausea, gas, lots of burping , some diarrhea, loss of appetite.[Many foods bother me now].A probiotic seems to have helped with the diarrhea..

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Gastritis is caused due to increased secretion of acid in the stomach. It is also called as 'acid peptic disease'. It causes mucosal erosion of the stomach and commonly occurs due to eating habits like consuming spicy foods and foods which would cause gastric mucosal irritation. It can also be caused due to infection by bacteria called 'H.pylori'. It manifests as nausea, vomiting and pain/burning sensation in upper abdomen. It should subside with intake of antacid medications.
Gasteroenteritis is inflammation of mucosa of gastrointestinal tract, which is caused due to infection by bacteria or protozoa or both. It manifests as vomiting, lower abdominal pain, abdominal spasms and diarrhoea. It needs to be treated with antiemetics and a course of antibiotics along with intake of probiotics. Fluid loss needs to be replaced depending on the amount of dehydration by administration of oral rehydration solution or intravenous fluids.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
