What Is The Dosage Of Lamictal For Seizures?

My 23 year old son is on Lamictal 100 mg twice a day for seizures. Onset of seizures was June 25, 2016 and was on Keppra for about a month or so and was switched to Lamictal eventually - with a starter kit first - a gradual increase dose until 100 mg twice a day was reached then Keppra was discontinued. For the past 2 weeks since starting college again he s had twitches. Sometimes he gets enough sleep 7 to 8hrs and once in a while he doesn t get enough sleep because of school and/or work. I ve contacted the doctor but he hasn t called back yet. I m just curious, are the twitches normal or should the Lamictal dosage be increased?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

No...twitches are never normal and have some organic cause.

I always use Lamictal as an adjuvant to other drug treatment of seizures. Lamictal is indicated as adjunctive therapy for patients aged 2 years and older and having...
partial-onset seizures.
primary generalized tonic-clonic (PGTC) seizures.
generalized seizures of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome
Lamictal is indicated for conversion to monotherapy in adults (aged 16 years and older) with partial-onset seizures who are receiving treatment with carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, or valproate as the single antiepileptic drug (AED).

Kindly discuss the drug treatment with your neurologist.
Sleep deprivation and long periods of fasting should be avoided in patients with seizures as they are known to be synergistic triggers. Kindly avoid this.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
