What Is The Duration To Take Pill After Periods ?

I have been having my period for 4 weeks straight now and I am on the pill. Starting tomorrow I should be on my period but I never stopped since I started a week early last month. I have had blood clots and now they are getting larger. When should I see the doctor?

Hi,
Thanks for the query.
Some amount of spotting can be seen while being on pills.
But prolonged bleeding with passage of clots is somewhat abnormal.
Better to consult gynecologist once and get evaluated.
Go for ultrasound, thyroid profile and coagulation profile.
Possibly with this workup the cause for your problem can be identified and treated.
With your doctor's advice you can go for anti fibrinolytic drugs to control the bleeding.
After investigations you can continue with your pills with your doctor's advice.
Take care.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
You should see your doctor right away.
It is NOT normal to have been bleeding for so long.
Probably you are having spotting most of the days, but you still need to consult your doctor.
Your birth control could be inadequate, and you might require a larger dose.
Also, such continuous bleeding or spotting could indicate a polyp, endometrial hyperplasia, polycystic ovaries etc.
It is best not to put it off.
See your doctor ideally before you start your new pack.
I am pretty confident you need to switch preparations of birth control.
Take care.

General & Family Physician Dr. Chobufo Ditah's  Response
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about continued bleeding for the past 4weeks. Pills, depending on the specific type can be taken in a continuous or interrupted fashion. Please, provide us with the brand name so that we can determine how it should be taken. I will suggest that you get consulted by a physician immediately to look into this persistent bleeding so as to avoid complications linked to persistent bleeding.

I hope you find this helpful. I wish you well. Please, feel free to ask for more information if need be. Thanks.
Dr. Ditah, MD.
