What Is The Etiology Of Lichen Planus?

I would like to know if lichen planus is a condition of the skin or in the blood stream? I have dark brown itchy spots on my upper legs and between my arm pits and breats area, my dermaltologist said that the dark spots will NOT go away. I am frustrated and would like to consult a second opinion.

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Lichen planus is a purely skin related condition and is characterised by itchy, purple, polygonal, papules and plaques distributed primarily over legs/shins, flexor wrists and flanks of abdomen.

Treatment involves topical potent steroids and oral antihistamines. For extensive disease oral steroids may be indicated.

The lesions of Lichen planus resolve with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation which is quite persistent and resolves slowly to treatment.

Treatment options for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are topical moderately potent steroids e.g mometasone furoate cream. Other skin lightening agents like Kojic acid, Hydroquinone, arbutin, lactokine, liquorice extract etc are also effective and available in various cream combinations. The treatment may have to be continued for months to produce satisfactory results.

Regards
