What Is The Life Expectancy Of An Elderly Person With C-diff Sepsis?

My mom has C-Diff and is septic. She is 80 years old and this keeps recurring, she looks horrible, will not eat and had not energy at all. She says she feels so bad that she doesn t want to eat. They have her on antibiotics for other things such at UTI s. Is there anything that can be done or are we looking at planning a funeral here. Thanks Anita Hegler

Hi Anita,
The life expectancy depends on how severe the sepsis is and how much of the vital organs are affected by the sepsis. With use of the right antibiotics, for which the bacteria is susceptible may result in recovery also. There are medications used to prevent recurrent C. difficile infections. Recently bezlotoxumab was approved for prevention of recurrence of such infections. Faecal transplantation also helps.
You can discuss these options with your care giver. Do not lose hope. Wish your mother a speedy recovery.
