Hi,
It is hard to pinpoint a precise figure in your case. It may be different value for each patient. It will depend on many factors like:
- Cause of heart failure like COPD or
Cardiomyopathy etc. as well as the severity of disease due to these causes.
- Risk factors like
smoking in your case, may have a negative effect on life expectancy.
- Active life style, having physical activity like a yard work etc. or other moderate physical exercises, may have a positive effect on the life expectancy.
- In the last and not the least, strictly adhering to the medicines prescribed by your doctor is of utmost importance.
- Also, co-morbidity like
hypertension,
diabetes, lipid disorders etc. may have a negative effect on the life expectancy.
It is hard to determine, how long a person is going to live ,once heart function reaches to 20%. Also, the prognosis depends on the type of heart failure besides LVEF, like
systolic heart failure or
diastolic heart failure.
Still, according to studies available, it has been seen that 5 year
survival rate varies from 25% to 95%, depending on the severity of heart failure. 5 year survival rate in patients with 15-25 % of LVEF, has been seen about 45-55 %.
However, with advancement in treatment protocols, many a patients may have 10 year or longer survival rate after the diagnosis of the disease even with LVEF as low as 15 %.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
