What Is The Life Expectancy Of Person With 20 Percent Heart Functioning?

My mother in law just had a massive heart attack on Wednesday. She had a 100% blockage in one artery and 70% in two others. They placed stints in all 3 and after two days we were told her heart is functioning at 20%. She is a diabetic who takes insulin with every meal. She is 63 and currently over weight. What should we expect for a life expectancy at this point?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

One can not predict life expectancy from the data of just ejection fraction. However, over all comments can be made that with the compensated heart failure and controlled systemic functions, diabetes, blood pressure, one can predict life expectancy of even many years in such conditions.

If there are associated comorbidities, such as arrhythmia, nutritional problems, ischemic strokes and others, one can predict shorter life span as has to be judged by her treating physician.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
