What Is The Painful Spot On The Side Of The Head Behind The Ear?

My 8yr old complained yesterday of a tender spot on the side of his head behind his ear. it is painful to touch, no redness, swelling, fever, or sign of a bugbite. When it is touched it is painful for him. He did not injure himself and doesn't know where it came from.
The bump is the size of a dime.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have painful spot on the side of the head behind the ear . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like otitis media , lymph node swelling , temporomandibular joint disorder , infected lipoma or mastoiditis . I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order test like CT scan , blood test and physical examination for tenderness and consistency . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics like clindamycin atleast for 5 days along with anti inflammatory . Doctor may also refer you to dentist for TMJ problem . For now apply warm compresses , take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain , keep this area clean and dry and take anti histamine twice a day because it can also occur sometimes due to allergic reaction .
