Hi, I had an abortion over a month ago. I am still bleeding somewhat heavy, is that normal? Also, how am i supposed to know when my regular period starts, and when does it normally begin? I am on birth control pills now.. I just want to know when the bleeding is supposed to stop?? I had a surgical abortion about 3 1/2 months into pregnancy. thanks *brittany YYYY@YYYY
Hello, After an abortion, which has been performed surgically, you can expect the bleeding to stop in a week or two. Persistence of the bleeding should not happen as this indicates retained products, hormonal imbalances or an infection. Moreover, the fact that you are on pills adds to the whole thing, because, bleeding disturbances are common during the initial months of pill usage. So, in the current scenario, you need help from your health care provider-a physical exam, a sonogram of the pelvis, blood profiles and urinalysis. You need styptics and if necessary, high doses of hormones to arrest the bleeding and switch to other form of contraception. Hope this helps.
