What Is The Procedure For The Genome Study Of Cancer?

my niece has a mammogram every year. This year they found 4 spots(cancer) about the size of a pencil eraser. 6 weeks later after further MRI s and tests she has decided to have both breasts removed. Do they have to do a genome study of her cancer? It was found in her milk ducts. She is in Oswego,Chicago and has a double mammogram scheduled for Tuesday at 1 PM. at Rush Copley in Aurora Illinois. I want them to do a genome of her cancer. Is that automatic?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
The decision of removal of both breasts by your doctor suggests that your niece is suffering from bilateral breast cancer.
Bilateral breast cancer is commonly seen in genetic syndromes which predispose an individual to cancers.
Thus, genetic study for genetic alteration should be carried out.
However, whether the genetic test is required or not should be decided by your doctor.
There are many genetic disorders which are associated with development with development of breast cancer.
Mutations of BRCA gene 1 and 2 are the most common mutations.
Consult your treating doctor/ oncologist for further work up.

Thanks and take care
