What Is The Reason Behind Swelling Of Gums?

On a couple of occasions when I've been running/hiking etc...There are times when I can't catch my breath very easy and my gums start to swell(even bleed) Other than just being out of shape(obviously) is there anything I should be worried about or have checked out? Thx.
