What Is The Remedy For A Black And Blue Nail After An Injury?
My 5yr old daughter jammed her finger in a door on Wednesday and it is black and blue under her nail. It also looks a little swollen right near her nail. It hurts only when I touch it. How do I know if it is infected? She also keeps asking if her nail is going to fall off. What should I tell her? Will it?
General & Family Physician, Dr. Sulochana's Response
Hello,
Thank you for writing to HCM
Black/blue colour under your daughters nail is subugual hematoma. Don't worry if the hematoma occupies only 25 to 30 % of the nail. If it involves more than 30% yu might need to meet your dermatologist in person to get it drained. Is there any deformity or bend on the nail? If so it should be removed. If there is any open injury there is more chances of infection. Don't worry your daughters nail will grow back! Consult your pediatrician for pain killers.
