Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I would keep a possibility of furuncle/bacterial infection of the hair follicle. Trying to pop it may have pushed it deeper

If I was your treating doctor I would have put him on oral antibiotic (penicillin group e.g Amoxycillin in combination with clavulanic acid) for a week

He could apply a topical antibacterial e.g 2% mupirocin is available OTC.

An OTC pain killer once or twice daily would help deal symptomatically with the pain.

regards
