What Is The Remedy For Tonsillitis ?

I think I have a tonsiolith. I can t remove it myself. It doesn t hurt although sometimes I get a little mucus in my throat and feel like there s an object there. It comes and goes. Sometimes other small spots appear, but after a while go away. What should I do? Some people told me to use salt water, but I haven t done anything yet (although I ve scheduled an appointment with a doctor). I m 36 and I m quitting smoking . Never had any serious medical condition.Thank you.

Hi,welcome to hcm, you need to have a throat -swab culture & anti-biotic sensitivity ,for proper antibiotic cover .
Before that smoking should be stopped ,smoking itself induces infection to throat and lungs ,directly or indirectly .
I further advice you to take opinion of physician ,for good prognosis.
Hope ,for your speedy recovery.

General & Family Physician Dr. Jeevan Jyot Bahia's  Response
Tonsoliths are tonsil stones or calcifications that occur in tonsillar crypts.Generally they produce no discomfort and no treatment is needed and they do not produce any symptoms.Gargling with warm, salty water may help alleviate the discomfort of tonsillitis, which often accompanies tonsil stones. Vigorous gargling each morning can also keep the tonsil crypts clear of all but the most persistent tonsilloliths.Larger tonsil stones may require removal by curettage, although thorough irrigation will still be required afterwards to effectively wash out smaller pieces. Larger lesions may require local excision although these treatments may not completely help the bad breath issues that are often associated with this condition. So such small tonsoliths may not pose any serous health issue ti you.

Otolaryngologist / ENT Specialist Dr. Sumit Bhatti's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Tonsilloliths are concretions of food particles and pus lodged in the natural crypts of the palatine tonsils. The white discharge is sometimes referred to as 'cheesy' or even 'toothpaste' like in consistency. The largest crypt is known as the crypta magna and is located near the upper pole of the palatine tonsil.

2. When we swallow, our palatine tonsils rub against the food bolus and pick up food particles. This food debris decays there while it is analysed for antigens, foreign bodies and organisms by the lymphoid tissue which forms the bulk of the tonsils. Below the age of five years, this is especially important in the deveopment of immunity.

3. Rarer still will be the possibilty of a recurrent small abscess in the peritonsillar space. However this would be unusual without local inflammation and lymph node tenderness in the neck. The mucus may be due to a Post Nasal Drip (PND).

4. Minor, occasional Tonsilloliths may be left alone. For recurrent large tonsilloliths or peritonsillar abscesses, the only definitive treatment is tonsillectomy. Use a medicated gargle, especially after the removal, to prevent re-accumulation. Get your doctor's examination done and ask for removal if you cannot remove it yourself.

Regards.
