Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi! I'm a staff RN at a small community hospital. I received an order from an MD for Ativan, 2mg po thru NG. The pharmacist sent a 2mg vial of injectable solution. When questioned he stated that " it's the same drug so give the solution thru the NG". I questioned his response as the vial clearly stated " for IM or IV use only" not to mention I have never given any IV solution thru an NG. The pt receiving the Ativan was 42, female, alcoholic. I didn't feel comfortable administering the solution via NG so I opted for the good old fashioned way of crushing the pill and putting it down the NG. Has anyone ever heard of giving Ativan IM/IV solution via NG? Please explain!!! I can't help but think that the practice of administering medication via a route it is not intended for is just not safe!
