Hi,I am Dr. Joan F. Tryzelaar (Cardiac Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother is 86 years old and very frail. She is having open hear surgery next week to fix two leaky valves. She has two broken vertebrae in her back because she has severe osteoporisis. She has very few symptoms, a little shortness of breath at times, but still mobile and happy, although she lives a very sedentary lifestyle. I am concerned that she is making the wrong decision, as far as her quality of life. What are the risks for her. Thanks
hello,i have gone through your query. Thanks for using HCM. At the age of 86 open heart surgery carries high risk.so at first instance any doctor will advise against open heart surgery unless life saving. In case of your mother i would like to know which 2 of the 4 valves are leaking, what is severity of leakage, what is pumping ability of heart and are there any blocks in coronaries? i can guide you properly only after knowing this detail, my best wishes Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD
If she is not very symptomatic , she can decide to continue medical treatment. But sometimes their is derangement of heart dimensions ,making us doctor go to surgery as a early treatment. There are risks in any surgery including breathing problems, kidney problems etc ,but it has to be weighed against the risks of having no surgery.
