What Is The Tingling In The Finger That Turned Purple?

My friend's finger turned white today and was tingling. It took about 15-25 minutes to come back to it's natural color. And the tingling subsided, but she said it felt weird... a little numb. She said it is now purplish in color, 7 hours later. What could this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post can be attributed to compression of blood vessels & nerves in the finger.
Investigations like X ray of the hand & Doppler study will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.

However, other causes for the symptoms need to be ruled out, such as:
1. Any fluctuation in blood pressure levels
2. Altered blood sugar levels
3. Inadequate hydration & nutrition status.
4. Deficiency of certain nutrients like Iron, Vitamin B 12, Calcium, Magnesium, etc.

Till then, management involves:
1. Nervigenic agents (like Vit B6, B12, Folic acid) as well as multivitamin & mineral supplementation.
2. Maintain adequate hydration & nutrition status, take proper rest and avoid stress.

If symptoms still persist, kindly consult a Neurologist for a proper clinical examination including nerve conduction study.

Wishing your friend a Good Health.
Take care.
