What Is The Treatment For An Ear Infection?

Hi, I have a horrible ear infection, I have been taking Augmentin-125 Tablets My Left ear has been ringing for the past 3 days and it is driving me crazy. I am also having a very hard time hearing out of it. Is this because of the infection, or the meds? Is there anything I can do about it? Will it go away?.... ok so there are 3 questions, hopefully you can help me out. Thank you, lady who has something else bothering her ears rather than her children :) melissa!

Dear Melissa,

On going through your history, it seems you have a genuine situation. Let me help you out of it.

Ringing in ears with decreased hearing are some common features while we get infection in the middle ear. It is usually due to collection of fluid behind the ear drum which generally should get drained through a tube ( Eustachian tube) to the nose. So the ear gets affected when this tube is not functioning properly and the health of this tube is directly dependent on the health of nose. Conditions like common cold, allergy can directly impact the functioning of Eustachian tube.

So our motive of management should direct towards treatment of the Eustachian tube. It is good you have started Augmentin. In my patients I add Xylometazoline nose drop 2 drops thrice daily ( Decongestant, which will open up the tube) along with Tablet Sinarest ( Antiallergic-antiinflammatory ) 1tablet twice daily for 5 days. The nose drop should not be used more than 5 days.

To add to it I advice my patients to do some simple exercise. When we swallow, the EUSTACHIAN TUBE gets opened & closed. So to make the tube work, while taking water you should take it in sips. One glass in 20 sips at least. In this way the fluid behind the ear drum should drain to nose and all your symptoms will be relieved and you can have a great time with your children.

I hope my answer will bring smile to your face. Please do not hesitate to clear any further doubt regarding your current situation.

Thanks for the way you are in my life.
