Hello and thanks for your query.
I understand that you are concerned about your daughter's recent anxiety problems. Now, anxiety disorders are a common co-morbidity in persons with mental retardation and autistic spectrum disorders.
From your description, it appears that your daughter is now having a relapse in her anxiety symptoms after coming of the
Neurontin.
Regarding your question about other anti-
anxiety medication, SSRIs like Escitalopram,
Sertraline, etc. are effective and safe anti-anxiety agents. They are use as first-line medication in the teratment of a variety of anxiety disorders and can be given on a long term basis without risk of habituation or dependence.
In persons with mental retardation / autism, who present with agitation, self-harming behaviour, etc. low doses of antipsychotics like
Risperidone or
Quetiapine can also be helpful.
So, I would suggest that you discuss about these options with her treating doctor so that the appropriate medication can be started.
Best wishes.
