Hello, about 4 months ago I started having what I thought was anxiety when I would swallow my saliva fearing I was going to choke, it worsened with food and drink but only if I thought about it. There are hours on end when I dont even think about it and im fine. Now the past week or so im noticing I have a raspy voice, the constant need to clear phlegm from my throat, and thick saliva. Im really concerned about what this could be. I plan on calling my ENT next week, but for now am looking for some insight
You have anxiety that you are going to chock and in order to get rid of that anxiety you are compelled to swallow the saliva. Now you also have developed the symptoms that you have raspy voice and you are compelled to clear throat for that. Though detailed evaluation is needed to make diagnosis but these symptoms appear to be occurring due to obsessive compulsive disorder a type of anxiety disorder. I would advise you to consult a psychiatrist for proper evaluation. As you remain normal when you don't think about this so this practically rules out any anatomical or pathological cause. In such symptoms medicines like SSRIs are used in high doses. Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine have good effects in reducing undesired behaviour and to relieve anxiety. Visit a psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs. Behaviour therapy by a psychologist and relaxation exercises also have good results in such symptoms.
Thanks, hope this helps you
