What Is The Treatment For Cyst In The Throat Causing Severe Cramps?

Hi there, i first noticed a stuck in my throat feeling around 7 weeks ago, right behind the cricoid in lower neck, then a few days later up popped a large thyroglossyl duct cyct for which im having a CT scan with contrast next week. When the TDC first came up i was having awfull cramps in both saliva glands under my chin, under my tounge, & after 2 weeks cramps stopped, i then started getting sour sting under my tounge, when i ate foods or was about to, not just spicy/sour foods but also cheeses, bread anything would set it off. Now that has stopped im quite ill, though i caught a cold as my sinuses have been blocked for 3 weeks & feel like i have a head cold, dazed, & having chills, with pain flares through my neck, lymph node under my chin is slightly swollen bean like, i can feel another in front of my left side saliva gland(under chin/tounge), these seem to have pain flares too, i feel cold all the time, esp in the mornings. Any ideas why i feel so ill & fatiged & should i go back to my GP before the scan, im getting worried about feeling soo i ll. many thanks for any advise!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history well and understood the concerns.
The enlargement of the lymph nodes, the salivary glands could have been due to the viral fever or can be reactionary to something.
The reduced resistance or secondary infection in the pre-existing Thyroglossal cyst made it to enlarge and caused the pain and so on.
Surely yes, the treatment of the Thyroglossal cyst is surgery and should be done by an experienced Surgeon who has done such cases before too as this is rare and one has to excise the cyst may be up to the base of tongue.
Since you already have undergone through a probable viral infection it would be wise to get recovered from this and then only to get the appointment for surgery after careful clinical evaluation, physical examination and normalized lab report.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
