What Is The Treatment For Extreme Depression?

my son is 21 and has been suffering with depression for several years. His drinking has gotten worse and he smokes pot. He has anger issues and has been violent at times. How do I get him help if he does not want it. How do I set limits for him? Do I insist he leave my home?

Hello, Welcome to Health Care Magic

He is a young 21 years old male and is abusing Marijuana. He is also suffering from depression and he also take alcohol. Both alcohol and pot are known to worsen depression. He is becoming violent and is showing anger outbrusts probably because of marijuana. In my opinion asking him to leave home will do nothing and instead may worsen the situation. He might become more depressed and he would increase his drug abuse. Please try to handle him in balanced manner. Try to find right time to talk, avoid talking him when he is in anger. Start to talk about his poor health and effects of drugs on his functioning. Once he become ready to talk on that maters try to make him agree to stop abusing these drugs. Proceed in slow and gradual manner.

It's not very difficult to quit marijuana but he might develop withdrawal of alcohol. In such case low dose benzodiazepines like Clonazepam can help. These drugs will also help to beat anxiety due to craving. Visit a psychiatrist for detailed evaluation and treatment.

Thanks, hope this helps you
