What Is The Treatment For Heavy Bleeding During Menstruation?

I am 52 and 6 months ago had an iud put in with hormones. I was premenopausal at the time and having extremely heavy periods lasting up to 30 days light spotting for a couple of weeks and then ful bleeding again. will a birth control pill be better? Is there anything else I can do. I never know when a gush will be coming and I have to have pads and tampax on me everywhere i go just in case and I just hate it
