My mother, an RN, age approximately 79, black, relatively good health, active, complains of hoarseness. Her EENT diagnosed GERD aggravated by her eating in bed lying down in the evening before bedtime. She complied to not eating lying down, but has still complained lately.
As per your query your mother has hoarseness in voice due to GERD ( gastrointestinal reflux disease ) . This occur due to dysfunction in upper sphincter of esophageal ,which allow the acidic content of stomach to come upward . I would suggest you to avoid heavy and spicy food specially at night , keep your head elevated while lying , eat at least one hour before going to bed , take antacid after meal and consult gastroenterologist for proper diagnosis . Doctor may prescribed drugs like proton pump inhibitor and H2 blocker . In some cases surgery is also required .
Hope your concern has been resolved.
