What Is The Treatment For Itchy Red Foreskin With Bad Odor? K

I developed a red, itchy, irritated looking foreskin with a fishy smell. No lesions were present, and the itch and irritation led me to believe it was a possible penile yeast infection , or fungel infection of some sort. I treated it with some vinegar and water, kept it clean and in a week it seemed to clear up and the redness went away. About a week after that, however, the redness returned with the same burning itch. I continued using vinegar as a treatment, but no use. My question to you is do you think the lesions appear to be herpes or something to do with a fungal infection? I have no other symptoms other than redness and burning under the foreskin.

Hello,

You are suffering from red, itchy foreskin with a fishy odor. Presently you are also having burning and make you uncomfortable. Commonly such symptoms occur due to poor hygiene, latex allergy. Use non-latex condoms. Other medical conditions that can cause similar symptoms are balanitis, yeast infection, chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, etc. You should take care of your hygiene. Take regular bath, wash clothes in hot water. Do not re-wear clothes on which you have sweated.

Wear loose fitting, soft cotton clothes. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a urologist. Get STD tests done to stay on the safer side. If positive you will be treated with a course of antibiotics/antivirals. In the meantime, avoid any type of sexual activity for a couple of days. You can apply ointment hydrocortisone to get rid of itching. Applying ointment clotrimazole on the affected area will reduce fungal infection. A course of antifungal orally may be effective. Since you are getting recurrent infection under the foreskin, your Urologist may recommend circumcision.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
