HI, I m currently on eltroxin having had an overactive thyroid that has been treated with radioactive iodine. Since being on 50mcg daily, my TSH has gone from 60 to 65. Now I m on 100mcg daily and latest bloods showed TSH at 74. I ve now been told to increase to 150mcg daily. That seems like a lot to me. I m a 49 year old female weighing 52kg.
Maximum levothyroxine dose requirement is 1.76 mcg per kg. Usually with 100 mcg levothyroxine treatment for 8 weeks, the TSH is expected to be on the road to normalization. Whether adequate time had been given before checking TSH after the commencement of therapy is important. Secondly whether anything is impairing your absorption of levothyroxine needs to be looked upon. Food and other medications are the most important culprit in this aspect. Give adequate gap between thyroid medications and your first tea and breakfast. If everything is ruled out, go for t4 absorption test.
