What Is The Treatment For Scars?

i have some scars that are really bad. i think they are called Hypertophic scars, but im not sure. i dont think they are keloid scars because they dont get any bigger and keloids tend to be rare. the scars are on my arms from self harm. i was a harmer for 4 1/2 or so years, but i have healed a lot since then. i am seeing a counselor and all that stuff. so i was wondering if there are any good ways that i can get rid of the scars. right now i am useing this lotion with aloe in it, a lotion with cocoa butter formula, vitamin e, and bio-oil. i am hoping to get rid of most of the scaring as soon as possible. thank you in advance :)

Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic.

Hypertrophic or keloidal scaring is due to excessive formation of scar tissue as part of the wound healing process. This is raised above the surface unlike normal scaring which is flat/level with the skin.

Keloidal scars are usually itchy and they extend beyond the wound margins with finger like projections, whereas hypertrophic scars are confined within the wound margins.

Hypertrophic scars/Keloids are best managed with intralesional steroids e.g intralesional triamcinolone acetonide. The depot injection causes breakdown of the excessive collagen tissue present in keloidal scar, thereby causing them to flatten.

The injection might be repeated after 3 weeks if required.
