A week ago today ( sunday ) I got up and my hearing is down to nothing. Can only hear a little bit when someone is right up to my ear. I have this buzzing sound and ringing sound in my ear/ head. I get a little dizzy from time to time. What may be wrong ? And what to do about it ? Please help . Thanks, Tim

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The most common causes of sudden reduction in hearing can be as follows:
- Fluid development inside the middle ear on both sides and usually transmitted through Eustachian tubes from nose
- Hearing Nerve infection usually viral
- Impaction of wax due to self cleaning

This can be diagnosed by the following ways:
- It is better to consult an ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation
- Audiometry
- MRI and CT of mastoids for bones, cochlea and nerves along with CP angle and brain
- Relevant tests of blood
All these will lead to a proper diagnosis and thus have a specific treatment as per the cause found. Do not try anything at home as this may increase your problems. Avoid excessive exposure to sound.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
