What Is The Treatment For Swollen And Painful Ankle?

my brother is in the hospital with his left shoulder an right ankle swollen an with much pain he said he had vomited a few days earlier what might this be ,im being told it is a blood infection an they are treating him what kind of infection does this,Could it be from food poisoning please advise
