What Is The Treatment For Swollen Tonsillitis?

I have had swollen tonsils for about 4 weeks now. I have been treated with penicillin which took the infection away but my throat is still sore and swollen. My friend told me that I also stop breathing several times when I am asleep. I have very disturbed sleep and wake up several times in the night. It also feels like the back of my nose is congested. What can I do?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about having taken Penicillin for tonsillitis that settled but pain and swelling remained, there is also sleep disturbance and feels that back of nose is congested.
All your history is suggestive that your treatment is still incomplete.
Continue the anti-inflammatory medicines along with a PPI like Omeprazole to have complete reduction in size of tonsils to normal.
Consult an ENT SUrgeon for proper clinical evaluation, examination, investigations and evaluation of sleep disturbance.
If the medicines fail to reduce the size of tonsils then it is better to go for surgical removal as this may help for sleep disturbance.
Povidone iodine gargles.
Further management as would be suggested by your ENT Surgeon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
