I went for pro-op and was told they could not due surgery because my ekg was showing acute mi and I felt fine and they toook my blood pressure and it was 140/80. Could this have been because I was just told I have hashimotos throid and my goiter is growing and that is why I was gojng for surgery.
Good day, Noted your concern. HAshimotos's thyroidits can cause the thyroid to grow and if assocated with uncontrolled hypothyroidism, it can cause slowing of heart rate. However, it ca cause MI indirectly by increasing abnormal cholesterol. Another way of Hashimotos affecting the heart is by enlarging the heart muscles. Only by analyzing the EKG and also doing an echo of heart, further evaluation is possible. To annswer your question, Yes, Hashimotos can cause your EKG changes, but it is rare. Regards Binu
