Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My GGT was recently shown to be elevated in my latest blood test. GGT was 197, ALT was 65, AST was 24, and ALK Pho was 137. I am 66 years old, non-drinker, and non-smoker. I did pass a kidney stone a couple of weeks before this blood test. Should I be worried, and what would cause this spike in my GGT? Thank you
Of course, GGT is a sensitive test, which is raised first of all liver enzymes. It is raised in liver or many bile duct diseases. However, if you are not symptomatic then alone a raised GGT should not be taken as a diagnosis of liver diseases.
In your case, as the ALT and Alkaline Phosphate are borderline raised and AST is in normal range. Hence, if you are asymptomatic, then only observation and follow up by serial testing is advised. Certain drugs like Acetaminophen, Carbamazepine and Phenytoin may also cause raised liver enzymes including GGT.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
