What Leads To Swollen Hands With History Of Having Knee Injury ?

I m a 50 year old woman. Average build, fairly fit. Nothing remarkable medically speaking except knee injury and ruptured c3-7. For the past week and a half my hands swell intermittently and are painful. I ve been taking alive for the pain. No fever. Today I fell off my stoop because I lost my balance which is odd. I regularly do yoga. It was sudden dizziness that caused the misstep. Should I be concerned?

Hello,

You have a history of knee injury and also ruptured C3-C7, now you are experiencing dizziness and swelling in the hands. Since you have cervical vertebrae issues, it can cause cervical vertigo as the nerves related to it help to control the head and neck, co-ordination and movement. Hand swelling is nothing to worry but it may be indicative of some underlying illness that requires treatment. Control weight, if overweight, cut on salty food, avoid purine rich diet. Stay away from addictions if any. Sometimes, side effects of certain medications (contraceptives' pills, BP medications, steroids, etc) may cause swollen hands.

You are suggested to get clinically examined for your cervical spine, get CT, MRI, etc, done to detect disc compression, cervical degenerative disc disease, etc. Get urinalysis, blood tests done to detect any pathology causing OA, RA, lymph edema, etc. You will be treated accordingly. In the meantime, avoid driving or doing heavy work. Take Acetaminophen, to ease pain due to swelling. Stay well fed and well hydrated, take rest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
