What Makes A Bruise At The Ankle Post Injury Turn From Black To Red Discoloration?

I have recently hurt my ankle.. I have gone to the doctor and it is unclear if it is a fracture or a very bad sprain.. I am concerned as my bruises have gone from dark black to red and when I google it or ask anybody no one has had this happen... was wondering if it was just normal to the heeling process or if I should be concerned.
