What Makes The Nipple Of A Cancer Patient Inverted?

My mother in law was diagnosed with stage IIIc ovarian cancer last October. She recently went for a follow up CA 125 and her numbers are beginning to climb although still in normal range (25). She has started to again have slight abdominal pain, but her concern is that her left nipple looks as though it has disappeared. I looked at it and it appears to have inverted. She didn t think anything about it but since her numbers are rising she wondered it she should have told her oncologist. Is this something I should encourage her to inform her oncologist about. She is to wait another month before her next appointment.

Hello, and i hope I can help you today.

Many women have inverted nipples, but sudden inversion of a nipple in a person who has never had one before unfortunately can be a symptom of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is also more common in women with ovarian cancer, and furthermore breast cancer can also spread to the ovaries, so depending on your mother's histology at her initial ovarian cancer staging, the cancer may have come from her breast in the first place.

So I strongly recommend you encourage your mother to notify her oncologist about her inverted nipple.

I sincerely hope for the best in your mother's cancer treatment.

Regards,

Dr. Brown
