Seems to be a case of Seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp which might have got infected with bacteria leading onto oozing, crusting/scabbing
If i was your treating doctor i would have want you to take an oral antibiotic(penicillin group) for a week to heal up the sores, along with Ketoconazole based shampoo thrice weekly. I prefer ketoconazole over selsun because of irritancy potential of the later.
If ketoconazole is'nt sufficient then i prefer to use a topical steroid lotion twice daily for 2 weeks which usually produces significant improvement within 2 weeks and this can be maintained with ketoconazole shampoo once or twice in a week.
take care regards
