What Might Have Caused Hives Over Face And Neck?

Hi, my daughter, 45 yrs old, has developed hives all over her, especially her face & neck. She changed her body wash & is wondering the possibly that could have caused this. She is taking 6 Benadryl a day to try & relieve the itch. She feels like scratching her skin off. She won't go to the dr or er. She's talking about going back to her old body wash in hopes that will help.

Dermatologist 's  Response
From the history you gave, it seems that she is suffering from acute urticaria. A condition where patients tend to get hives when exposed to the substance they are allergic to. This substance can be present in water, air, in food etc. So in most cases it is pretty hard to avoid the hives from coming and also to identify the source of allergy. Allergy testing does not seem to be much effective.
1. Identify the possible source: Something new in last month may it be clothing, skin product, new type of food, perfumes or any medications (fever/cold medications).
2. Avoid the source completely.
3. Till the time you identify the culprit take long acting antihistaminic like levocetrizine which wont cause you dizziness/sedation and hydroxyzine 10-25mg at night/before sleep.
4. In most cases, the search for the allergen usually fails so following options could be explored:
- Autohemotherapy
- Long term antihistaminic therapy
