What Precautions Should Be Taken For Quick Recovery Of An Injured Thumb?

my son has a deep cut from a table saw at school on his left thumb...should he do P.E. he had several stitches and a big gash is left to heal as the saw took a chunk of his thumb...how can he help it heal quickly..I m so afraid of infection...should he keep it covered all the time or air out to form a scab.
