What Precautions Should Be Taken While Suffering From Shingles?

My 85 year old mom was just diagnosed with shingles on her face. She has to see an ophthalmologist tomorrow to have her eyes checked as she has some lesions close to her eye. What precautions should we take and is it necessary for her to see an opthamlogist or can an optometrist check her as well?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Having a check with an ophthalmologist is all that is needed. Very likely the doctor will prescribe oral acyclovir to prevent damage of the eye and reduced vision.

The only precautions are that she should be aware that this is a contagious disease so she should wash her hands with water and soap before and after touching her face and eyes. She should use personal towels and not share towels with others.
The doctor will further give her advice and treatment to help her improve fast and well.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
