What Should Be The Sodium Intake In Heart Patient?
Hi, I have a question on how much sodium intake (mg a day)should a lady with severe heart and kidney disease, would you recommend for a daily intake goal? My mother in law has had congestive heart failure, and she only has 1 kidney left, as her other kidney was removed due to cancer. We are trying to come up with a no/ low salt diet for her, and she s picky as all get out. Please help.
Welcome to healthcaremagic, The upper limit for daily salt intake is 5 grams of salt (sodium chloride) per day. But as your mother in law had congestive heart failure and has only 1 kidney left the salt intake should be even lower, less than 3 grams of salt per day. Also try to avoid food rich is salt such as pickles, pappad, salty chips etc. Hope that answers your question, Regards, Dr.Imaad.
