What Sort Of A Doctor Do I See For Esophageal Ulcer?

My 28 year old son was just diagnosed with a 15 cm esophageal ulcer. What kind of a specialist do we need to see. He was throwing up red blood and we took him to a hospital. They did a upper GI (?) scope and this is what they told us. The doctor in the emergency room was very rude and we have no interest in following up with him.

Hi there..

Thanks for writing in...

Please try to follow these measures, provided your son is discharged from the hospital:

1.The doctor might have prescribed him some proton pump inhibitors like pantoprazole etc.and other medications. Let him continue to take those medications and follow the advice given by the treating physician.

2.Avoid smoking, alcohol, tea, coffee, carbonated beverages, oily, spicy and fatty food.
3. Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day

If your son is still in the hospital with complications like oesophageal ulcer, bleeding or perforation, he needs to see a surgeon.

However, if he is stable and at home now, he can see a gastroenterologist for his next visit.

Wishing your son a speedy recovery.

Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
