Hi,

Mental retardation can be due to many reasons including genetic causes, metabolic causes, developmental causes and birth related incidents. It is important to know the cause of mental retardation in your sister. You can consult a psychiatrist is your place and try to find out what is the reason your sister is mentally retarded. Once you know the possible reason, it will help to discuss with your gynecologist if it can cause mental retardation in your baby. Genetic defects can sometimes be known by testing at 12 - 16 weeks and this is regularised and done only in selected places. Your gynecologist can ask for specific tests like aminocentesis and chorionic villous sampling to know if any major genetic defect might be present.

If your sister is mentally retarded due to non genetic cause then there is less chance of your baby having any mental disease.
