What To Do For Blacken Nail Due To An Injury?

I had an injury to my great toe, resulting in nail damage. Two and a half years later the nail has turned black and has separated from the nail bed on the left side of the toe. I live in Central America and need to know what type of specialist to see for care. I appreciate any help you are able to give to me. Thank you.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern for the black nail after the injury. It is quite a long period since you have got the problem and as per the description it appears to be fungal infection of nail called as onychomycosis.

In such a situation I prefer to give oral anti-fungal such as terbinafine for 3 months of period. Additionally a nail paint containing Amorolfine helps out in clearing the nail infection early.

I additionally suggest you to reduce the wetting of nail at its best as wet area of nail always causes more tendency for the growth of the fungus.

All the best.
