What To Do For Heavy Periods?

I am in my 40s and beginning to have very heavy periods where I often pass clots, some large. Would switching to also use a tampon along with a pad (from just pads) help or hurt the situation? Just can't take another cycle of feeling like I can't leave the house because I keep flooding. Please advise.
