What To Do If Am Restricted To Take Cough Suppressants And Have Severe Dry Cough With Gagging?

hi, I ve had asthma since I was a little girl but it only flares up when I catch a cold. Then the cough lingers for weeks. But it s the nights that are so bothersome that I cough so much it keeps me awake. What s worst is that I ll have an episode of coughs so dry and hard that I end up red in the face and gagging. What can I do to calm the coughing without taking more medication? I ve tried eating manuka honey and ive been told NOT to take any cough suppressants... help please

Hi,
Thanks for writing your query.

After reading your post, I would like to advise you that since you are having asthmatic cough, you need bronchodilators. Asthmatic cough occurs due to constriction in the air passage. Bronchodilators help to dilate the constricted airway and cure the cough.

You can take bronchodilator like Levosalbutamol either in syrup form, orally or as an inhaler. Use of inhaler is better as it has least side effects and has rapid action in controlling your symptoms.

You can also add an antihistamine like cetrizine 10 mg for treating an allergic reaction.

I hope this is helpful to you.
Thanks.
