What Treatment Should I Take For Productive Cough, chest Pain And Shortness Of Breath Post Medicines For Sinus ?

Hi! I thought I had a sinus infection two weeks ago and was put on amoxicillin (due to a history of Vasculitis ) and as soon as I finished the antibiotics, I started feeling sick again: mainly head congestion. The doctor gave me Augmentin and today is my third day on the medication; however, while the head congestion feels better than it had before, I am coughing (without very much mucus being expelled) and it hurts my chest. I also have a shortness of breath and my chest hurts a little bit. My pulse is around 110, resting. Breathing in and out, there is often a slight whistling sound. I do not seem to have a fever, though I did have a low-grade one last night. I also have been taking a chest decongestant . What should I do?

Hi,

As per your case history, you seem to have acute sinusitis of bacterial origin. So your doctor has prescribed you Augmentin. This antibiotic needs to be continued for 10 -14 days so that infection clears up.
You can continue using chest decongestant as well.
Start steam inhalation so that breathing difficulty is relieved.
With completion of antibiotic course, fever, cough and head congestion will come down.
If you still continue to get above symptoms in spite of antibiotic, then review again with your doctor and imaging like CT/MRI may be required to rule out complications[meningitis, vision problem, ear infection, chronic sinusitis].

Best regards,
Dr. Neelam.

Hi, I think you should go for an X-Ray chest and get your self reviewed by a chest physician. Avoid cold beverages and take steam to loosen up your congestion. A cough syrup with a pain killer is likely to be helpful. Take care.

Hi,

You must do steam inhalation continuously for three times in a day for a minimum of 1 month. You may also require nebulizations. Please get a repeat chest X-ray done to rule out any residual infection in your chest.

Please get yourself re-evaluated.
