What Would Cause Red Rashes And Swelling All Over The Body While On Niftran?

My mother is suffering from allergy where in maximum body part like neck, hand, leg, thigh, back has some red mark with swelling skin . He often use NIFTRAN tab at bed time since one year, but this is happening since couple of weeks ago only at night time. Is it due to NUFTRAN tab. Please suggest. Thanks XXXX

Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the Niftran is used as a bactericidal antibiotic with the content of Nitrofurantoin (usually to cover urinary pathogens) for a prescribed duration of period of a week or 2 according to the clinician decision.

The long term use over a year is not warranted at all in majority of the clinical concerns. However, current red rashes and swelling all over the body are certainly in concern with the side effect of the Nitrofurantoin medication. You should stop further dose intake of the medicine by her and consult her doc office for further guidelines.
